When you hear discussion about local athletics teams, what sports usually come to mind? Football, soccer, and basketball? What about bowling?

No other sport is quite like it: it’s a game in which two teams roll a ball down an alley to knock down as many pins as possible. Often taking place over the course of multiple games, bowling is one of the longer and mostly unnoticed sports, to the point where before writing this article I didn’t know we had a team at all.

Yes, GHS has bowling teams. Counting for a PE credit, students can join bowling at the beginning of every year.

bowling 1The girls team consists of junior Kailie Hurst, sophomore Jami Cervantes, sophomore Jazmen Bothe, junior Kirsten Rodriguez and coach Stephanie Rossi. They compete against other teams every Tuesday night.

“Our matches are on Tuesday nights at 4:30 pm and we travel to the other “home” centers which are Country Club (Memorial, Central & Jimtown) and Signature Lanes (Concord & Northridge),” said Rossi.

At a bowling match, students compete against other schools by bowling two games according to Rossi.

The line-up for each game consists of five bowlers and you can have two subs on your roster for the day. Each bowler bowls against one other opponent, and whoever scores the highest gets a point for their team. If the team’s overall score adds up to beat their opponent they get five (5) points for that game. There are a total of 20 points possible each match and the team who wins the most points will get the win.

However, if there is a tie for points (10-10) the team that wins is the one with the highest total pinfall for both games combined explained Rossi.

bowling 2The game may seem simple, but bowling requires constant practice in order to stay in top condition.

Most people bowl for fun or for birthday parties, however Rossi said, “Competitive bowling is a little bit different than the recreational bowling that most people know and do.”

“To be competitive,” said Rossi. “You have to practice like you would in anything else that you would like to be good at (like sports, band, singing, etc.).”

To see the bowling team, visit their practices Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm at Maple City Bowl.
