ONE, TWO, THREE, PIN!

If you know anything about wrestling whatsoever these are probably either the most rewarding or most upsetting words to hear during a match.

Eric Contreras knows what I mean.

“It’s you against another kid, for six minutes, and at the end, you see who is the better of the two,” said Contreras.

It’s this rewarding feeling in the end of being the wrestler with your hand in the air while your opponent drops his head in utter defeat that keeps Contreras coming back.

“The feeling I get is something else, I always feel a little bit of nerves but mostly I’m excited,” he said. “That’s why I keep wrestling. Because of that rush it gives me.”

Wrestling is requires huge amounts of energy, can put a player’s health on the line, and is historically successful. Despite all this, it often goes unnoticed among students at GHS.

Arguably the most historically successful sports team at GHS, Goshen Wrestling the team has only had two losing seasons in its 48-year existence.

Coach Jim Pickard knows exactly what characteristics it takes to make a successful wrestler. “Hard work and dedication,” listed Pickard. “It’s something we stress again and again.”

In addition to its success, wrestling puts a huge strain on health. According to Urban Dictionary wrestling is “the toughest sport out there, in which you go for as many as 5 days with no food, 2 without water, and work out in a sauna after possibly intense normal practices to make a low weight close.”

Often, GHS wrestlers change their diets in order to make the desired weight class.

If you have failed to notice the wrestling team thus far in your time here at GHS, sports fan or not, it’s about time to start recognizing them.

Practice is already underway, but if you still wish to be a part of some bigger than yourself, speak with Pickard to discuss your future as a RedHawk wrestler.

If you think wrestling is not for you, it would still be worthwhile to support your classmates and catch the team in action at some point this season.

“Our matches are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays and some Saturdays,” said Pickard. “JV matches normally starts at 6:45 pm and Varsity around 7:15-7:45 pm.
