A burst of sound fills the rehearsal hallway of the Goshen College Music Center—Sommo Voci is rehearsing.

Sommo Voci is a high school community choir, hosted by the Community School of the Arts. They are an honors level choir, often learning college level music.

“My freshman year, I heard about the choir and I wanted to be more involved in choir,” said Skylar Wetzell, a junior at Goshen High School starting her third year in Sommo Voci. “It’s a nice way to get to know people from the community and to learn music you wouldn’t necessarily learn in school.”

Sommo Voci is an opportunity not often presented to high school students. This choir is not directly connected with any particular high school, giving students across Northern Indiana a chance to perform with other students who are as passionate about choral music. It is a great way to both meet new friends and to explore new opportunities in the music performance world.

“We’ve sung different things throughout the year,” said Wetzell. “Last year, we had the opportunity to sing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the college choirs and orchestra, so that was pretty cool.”

They have a variety of performances— on November second, they performed during First Fridays and on November eleventh they performed in the Sauder Music Hall at Goshen College. Marcia Yost, the director, has even rumored about an opportunity in the Spring for Sommo Voci members to perform solos and duets.

The Community School of the Arts also includes many other choirs—Rejoice for elementary schoolers and Shout for Joy for middle schoolers. They also host the Allegro Beginning String Ensemble and the Youth Honors Orchestra.
